The Pharcyde

The Pharcyde’s definitive sound helped shape a legendary 90s hip hop renaissance. With their now classic debut, Bizarre Ride II: The Pharcyde, Tre “Slimkid3” Hardson, Emandu “Imani” Wilcox, Derrick “Fatlip” Stewart and Romye “Bootie Brown” Robinson, created a surreal and cartoonish, jazz-laden soundscape, laced with freaky humor, far-out lyrical imagery and “ya mama” jokes that would ultimately secure their position as icons in the golden era of hip hop.

The creative genius of the group was in its broad appeal that turned hip hop heads, skaters, alternative fans, punks and hippies alike into Pharcyde fans with an eclectic diversity of classic samples and subject matter that included “Hilarious skits, stoned observations, clownish antics and bitter ironies, coupled with multilayered production,” according to 4080 magazine. The album’s hit single “Passin’ Me By” went on to become a timeless hip hop classic, and in 1996 Bizarre Ride was certified Gold by RIAA. They released their sophomore album, Labcabincalifornia, in 1995, which featured the masterful production of the late producer extraordinaire Jay Dilla. With hits like “Runnin’” and “Drop,” Labcabin went on to sell over 450,000 copies.
