Katéy Assem currently serves as Executive Director of the Chicago State University Foundation, a position he held in the past. Previously, he was Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the North Carolina Central University Foundation. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Assem served as Vice President for Advancement and Research at Fort Valley State University and as Chief Executive Officer of the FVSU Foundation where he completed a $44 million bond program to build a new residential and academic village. Before joining FVSU, Mr. Assem was Chief Advancement Officer and Executive Director of the Chicago State University (CSU) Foundation.
Mr. Assem has served as Associate Vice President and Campaign Director at Hampton University, Executive Director of The Door, Inc., the largest and most comprehensive youth services agency in New York City and also as Executive Assistant to the Commissioner of the New York State Division for Youth. Indeed, he has held several positions of responsibility in the corporate, government, education and human services sectors. Through his University career, Mr. Assem has been responsible for public and private fundraising activities, development, investment and oversight of endowments and the disbursement of funds for student scholarships, faculty research support and university-wide technology and infrastructure support.
Mr. Assem received his Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics from the University of Ghana, Legon and Masters of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a Certificate in Fundraising Management (CFRM) from the Indiana University-Perdue University Fundraising School. He was also, a Fulbright Scholar with the Council of International Programs in Chicago, Illinois.
Mr. Assem has served on the boards of several organizations including serving as chairman of Harlem United Community AIDS Centers, Inc. in New York City, and Abraham Lincoln Center, in Chicago, Illinois. He has served on the boards of Calumet Area Industrial Commission, Chicago, Illinois, and the Chicago Corporate Responsibility Group and Hostelling International Inc. Mr. Assem is also a Deacon of Chicago United and a member of the National Association of Black Social Workers, the National Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Chicago Donors Forum.
Mr. Assem returns to the CSU Foundation with over 28 years experience working in human services, juvenile justice and education. He has designed Rites of Passage programs for community centers, churches and juvenile correctional institutions. He has co-authored two books on working with children and families in foster care and adoption and is currently completing a manuscript on Rites of Passage.
Mr. Assem is the father of three grown sons and has three grandsons and two granddaughters.
